RMA’s…

As probably just about everyone has experienced: things break down. I’ve had various computer accessories break down on me in the last month, among which 2 hard drives. Instead of returning them to the retailer I decided to go straight to their respective manufacturers, Maxtor (now owned by Seagate) & Western Digital.

First I did the Maxtor drive. I went to http://my.seagate.com/ and filled out a Return Material Authorization form. I quickly received an email from them with all the needed info. Last saturday afternoon I dropped the package off at the post office, destined for Seagate Sweden. Tuesday I got 2 emails from Seagate Netherlands, the 1st confirming receiving the drive, and the 2nd informing me that a new unit had been shipped. And today I already got the replacement drive. Fast service! My compliments!

Western Digital, on the other hand… After my good experiences with Seagate I thought Western Digital would be a breeze as well… How wrong one could be…
After filling in the info on their website I got redirected to a page with some legal mumbo-jumbo about trade restrictions not permitting Western Digital from dealing with RMA’s from Norway, and telling me to handle it via my retailer instead…
Personally I am not aware of any trade restrictions between the USA & Norway, but I guess Western Digital knows better…
Anyway… No choice but to contact the retailer and wait… (one of the reasons I wanted to try the manufacturer is that I am not quite happy with the RMA-processing time of my retailer…)
