Delirium, c’est magnifique!

DeliriumThe day had finally arrived: Tonight I’d be experiencing Delirium by Cirque du Soleil! More than 10 years ago I had the pleasure of seeing them in action before, when they performed their show Alegria in Amsterdam. Ever since then I’ve been hoping for them to visit Norway with one of their shows. And in October 2007 this wish finally came true.

After enjoying an all-you-can-eat pizza buffet at Pizzarelli in Moss (close to where I work), we headed out to the ‘big’ city. Since our GPS had some trouble guiding us to the parking at Oslo Spektrum (it kept complaining about our route passing over a ‘private road’), we decided to park at Oslo Central Station instead. From there it was a 5 minutes walk to the theater.

Since I had bought the tickets online, less than 10 minutes after sales opened, I had managed to get a couple of seats on row 3. Not cheap (that section of the theatre costs NOK 775 / US$ 143 / €100 a seat…), but (I hoped) worth the expense.
Well, it was even slightly better than expected since it turned out rows 1 & 2 did not exist! So actually we’d ended up on the front row! 🙂

The show was… perfect! I’m not going to give away anything of the act/plot, but here is a clip.
(This clip doesn’t really do the show justice. I would recommend people to head over to this page to view a preview instead.)
The show is a bit different from their other shows since Delirium is a multimedia/theatrical production that features remixes of existing Cirque music and reinterpretations of performances.

The only negative thing, IMHO, was the audience sometimes… There were quite some yokels in the audience who seemed to think they were attending a local soccer game, instead of a piece of art, and whistled on their fingers, or applauded during the acts, instead of waiting until the end.
(If I remember correctly this was better handled at Alegria, where the audience was specifically told to hold applause until the end of the entire performance).

And now I guess I have no choice but to wait for their next performance. I have no idea when/if they will ever return to Norway, but luckily they will be performing in Amsterdam again, coinciding with my next visit to the Netherlands!

So if all goes well we’ll be seeing Varekai in Amsterdam in March 2008! 🙂

  1. Hmm, looks like we were just in time with visiting Pizzarelli… When I passed it this morning it was closed to renovation and a banner announced it would be turned into a Dolly Dimple… 🙁
