A more proper title would probably be A program with similar/improved functionality to Siri for Android. Actually naming the Android program Siri would get you a wolf pack of Apple lawyers on your hiney so fast that you won’t even have time to ask your Siri-surrogate to locate you the nearest criminal defense lawyer

What is Siri? Let’s see what our good friend the Wikipedia has on the subject…
Siri (pronounced /?s?ri/) is an intelligent software assistant and knowledge navigator functioning as a personal assistant application for iOS. The application uses a natural language user interface to answer questions, make recommendations, and perform actions by delegating requests to a set of web services. Apple claims that the software adapts to the user’s individual preferences over time and personalizes results, as well as accomplishing tasks such as finding recommendations for nearby restaurants, or getting directions.

Sounds all pretty impressive, right? Well, what Siri & Apple can do, Android & Google can do better/as well/different! They’re currently working on Google Majel. For the Trekkies among you: Yes, this project is named after Majel Barrett, who supplied voice of most onboard computer interfaces throughout the Star Trek series. She also portrayed Nurse Christine Chapel in the original Star Trek series, and Lwaxana Troi on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Fortunately we don’t have to wait until Majel gets released. There are plenty of alternatives already available in the Android Market. Here are some, in no particular order:

So far I’ve only tried iris. myself, but I hope to test Skyvi & Speaktoit soon as well.

For those of you who want to see more about the capabilities of Siri I can recommend S05E14 of the Big Bang Theory. Here’s a bit of it:

As I mentioned in my previous post, I have been considering getting rid of my glasses by means of refractive eye surgery.

Here in Norway there are several providers of this service, and I have decided to go for Memira.
Earlier today I made an appointment for an initial check and if I happen to be part of the 80% who get approved then I get scheduled for ‘surgery’ and it will be phasers on stun, zap! zap!, and for the first time in more than 25 years I’ll be walking the streets without the need for any glasses! :-)

Actually, the title of this posting is bit inaccurate… There is no vs. when it comes to operating systems. All there is is an and!

Almost every day I run into people who are… narrow-minded, for the lack of a better word.

Narrow-minded, because they approach the whole thing backwards. They first set their mind on a specific OS, and then they look at what the options are to deal with the project at hand.

Wrong, wrong, wrong…! You first look at what the best way is to deal with the situation at hand, and then you use the operating system that application runs best on!
Both Microsoft Windows and Linux (and Mac OS X, OpenSolaris, IRIX, etc etc) have their strong and their weak sides.
However, if I were to start summing them up here, this posting would…

So the next time you have to make a choice on the right software for a project, look at your resources (budget, hardware, etc) and then first find the right application for your needs.
Once you have that, there is a good chance it simply runs on only 1 OS.
If this is not the case, then and only then, you can start making operating system choices.

Apple, Linux and Microsoft
And don’t worry about ending up with a mixed environment. I know from long experience that in quite some cases Microsoft & Linux talk better together than Microsoft & Microsoft, or Linux & Linux for that matter.

To sum up: Computers and operating systems work well together, so you can and should go for the best of both worlds.

(It’s not like the whole Star Trek vs. Star Wars discussion where there is a clear winner) ;-)

I just watched Futurama: Bender’s Game on DVD. A delightful mixture of many great movies, series and even a board game!
The idea was to spoof Dungeons and Dragons. That the execution of this idea happened to coincide with its creator, Ernest Gary Gygax, is just a… well… coincidence! ;-)
The movie producers have managed to come up with a perfect balance of a the traditional elements of Futurama, a healthy splash of D&D, a dash of Star Trek, a smidge of Star Wars, a pinch of Teletubbies(!), and a [enter your cooking/baking measuring unit here] of 2001: A Space Odyssey. And some other movies and series which I won’t bother to mention here and now…

This combination makes a very entertaining movie, imho the best Futurama movie so far! Looking forward to see whether Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder will be able to surpass this one…
