Catfishing: The phenomenon of internet predators that fabricate online identities and entire social circles to trick people into emotional/romantic relationships (over a long period of time).
Possible motivations: revenge, loneliness, curiosity, boredom.
The term catfishing was inspired by the 2010 documentary Catfish.
A catfish is someone who assumes a false identity on the Internet using various platforms including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. A catfish is often undesirable in comparison to their profile, as an actual catfish would be to a premium “catch” fish like Norwegian salmon.
